What Is Overtone Singing?

Overtone singing is the art of singing more than one note at a time. With focus and intent the singer reshapes the vocal chamber of the throat and mouth to create a variable resonance. The overtones are sympathetic sounds which seem to originate from outside the singer. They show up in an other-worldly way in other parts of the room. Overtone singing can be heard in Tibetan chanting, Gregorian singing, Native American throat singing, and in many other cultures.

What we Do:

We create a unique form of music by using overtones, undertones, rhythm, mantras and "vocables" (sounds rather than words) to create a sacred soundscape. It's all about activating the mystical and magical nature of music by creating from the heart. We bring awareness of the divine gift of sound that we all share.

Who We Are:

The group is comprised of men with a wide musical and artistic backgrounds.  What unites us is the love of the sacred as expressed through our voices.  We are on a spiritual journey and have chosen to live as consciously as possible, discovering personal healing, personal development, brotherhood and a deepening respect for ourselves through music.

Choir members from left to right: John Burke, Tom Evans, Larry Ogrodnik, Terry Martyniuk, Tomas Ketterputz, Tanner Grost, Chris McIntire, Cris Fowles, Greg Birdsall, Jerry DesVoignes, Jesai Jhaymes (not present in phonto).

Genesis:

The One Voice Choir was founded by Jerry DesVoignes, an internationally recognized singer and composer. Jerry has conducted voice workshops for the past five years teaching people overtone singing, reclaiming and discovering the joy in their own voices.

Jerry also created "Chanting in the Round", a unique audience-participation event which creates a sacred sound space.   Chanting in the Round features the MantraVani Orchestra and guest artists.   The event has been performed in a number of venues in Canada and the U.S..

Impact On Us and Others:

Harmonic singing creates a tangible sense of the miraculous, brings about clarity of mind and a meditative state. It creates healing on a personal and universal level. The entire body becomes resonant as you create a unified field around yourself.  Singers find that their tone, pitch and range improve greatly. An interesting effect is that it is calming to children and animals.  We as a choir experience profound changes in awareness during and after performances and look forward to sharing our music with you.

Wide-Ranging Appeal:

We perform with the Mantra Vani Orchestra as well as a capella. Workshops are designed for children, young adults, corporations and seminars, ranging in size from small groups to 300 people. We can be highly energetic or focus on the sacred and healing aspects of sound. 2001 performances include the Sacred Music Festival, the 2001 Summit, Christ Church Cathedral, Wizard Camp and Chanting in the Round evenings.
